Peak Oil

San Francisco Post Carbon was formed in autumn 2004 as a peak oil discussion and reading group. Since then we've engaged with a growing number of groups forming in Northern California around the issue of energy depletion. SFPC is part of a growing network of activists exploring community responses to the challenging issues that face us: preparing for global climate change and energy depletion, and building stronger local economies.

SFPC Projects

We're a project-oriented group that has focused on creating communication tools to help people understand and better communicate the broad implications of resource depletion. Here are some of the projects we've participated in:

  • "The Oil Age" Poster
Our educational poster (oilposter.org) titled "The Oil Age" has been remarkably successful in communicating the significance and urgency of peak oil. Over 3000 posters have been donated to educators. Every member of congress has received a poster thanks to the assistance of Rep. Roscoe Bartlett. Posters are sold through the Post Carbon Institute web site, benefiting PCI and furthering our objective to distribute posters to educators and influential individuals and institutions.
  • College Course on Peak Oil
SFPC member David Huck created a college-level course on peak oil, which he taught at Oberlin during the Spring 2006 semester. Local members worked with David to refine the syllabus during working sessions, offering feedback and ideas on the course content and readings.
  • Energy Substitution Grid
We're presently working on a data tool to help contrast and compare the technical benefits/limitations of substituting one energy form for another.
  • News Response Team
When an egregious article appears in a major publication, we selectively write a letter to the editor for publication to offset the misinformation. This project is in conjunction with the East Bay group. We're actively looking for new project ideas that we can participate in or help support.
