May 7, 2006, local peak oil groups came together in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco for a picnic. We lucked out in that it was a sunny (and even hot! by mid afternoon) day. People dragged food, loved ones, solar cookers, and (one) dog to the event, and all seemed to have a good time. A heated, fun, competition was conducted between three solar cookers which were brought to show options other than cooking with fossil fuels. Richard Katz's homemade cooker (cardboard, aluminum foil, a piece of glass and possibly a few other materials) actually "beat out" two of the store-bought variety (Michael Poremba's and Alice Friedemann's). It was enlightening to see how well the cookers worked. Or didn't. The original flyer and maps to the park is archived here. This photo is of Annie and Valentine Katz
