![]() At one point in "The Myths of Biofuels," Mr. Fridley told the audience a short story comparing two varieties of potatoes grown on a potato farm. These were representative, respectively, of petroleum and biodiesel. This story helped to clarify the concept of EROEI (Energy Return on Energy Investment), which many people may not be familiar with. An "Arab Lite" potato strain is used as an example (equating to petroleum) of a product that required the planting of one potato plant in order to get thirty potatoes out at the end of the season. But then something happened to the Arab Lite strain of potatoes, and the new strain, "Biogreen Potatoes," was created, and it was being touted by the government as the answer to all the potato farmers' strife. What the potato farmers didn't know was when they planted one of the new green potato plants, at the end of the season they would harvest only two instead of thirty potatoes. This little story inspired an animation midway through the video. Some of the "stars" of this animation are in the images on this page. While creating this, I discovered how full of bugs the internet really is. |
